Haditha

The report is in and--surprise!--Haditha was a massacre. Here's the news story. And here's some excerpts from the report.

"Statements made by the chain of command during interviews for this investigation, taken as a whole, suggest that Iraqi civilian lives are not as important as U.S. lives, their deaths are just the cost of doing business, and that the Marines need to get 'the job done' no matter what it takes. These comments had the potential to desensitize the Marines to concern for the Iraqi populace and portray them all as the enemy even if they are noncombatants

For those of us who read this Vanity Fair article back in November, this isn't really news, so much as a  bit of relief that the official record and the actual story now seem to coincide.

Wars tend to have the contesting forces dehumanizing either other and that extends to civilians. I guess we are learning that in non-conventional clashes, among the opponents the good guys and the bad guys all look alike and dress alike. Even speak alike. Yikes! Hmmmmm. What an insight for our Commander-Codpiece-in-Chief to learn. Is anybody prepared to help him gain this nugget of truth?
