Eve Fairbanks gives Monica Goodling some (relative) props:
But the sad truth is that Goodling--the shlump everybody, from Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty to low-level political appointees to the New York Times editorial page loved to blame--was more impressive in her hearing than the attorney general and his former chief of staff combined. Which isn't to say she was enlightening--after leaving the hearing, I still don't know why most of the eight U.S. attorneys were fired.
It's true. Monica Goodling--in the safe arms of immunity--was more candid than all those who came before her. Which is evidence that, in the face of complicated crimes, the House Judiciary Committee is conducting a pretty clever investigation. But I think what Eve must mean in her last sentence is something more like "Monica Goodling didn't confirm what we I know very well about the U.S. attorney firings". Because Eve, a good friend of mine, is a smarty. And I don't believe for a second that the very, very clear motivation for the U.S. attorney firings in any way eludes her.
