Richard Cohen suggests that Democrats might have just as hard a time winning in 2008 as they did in 1972. This ignores the fact that Richard Nixon was proclaiming that thanks to him the war in Vietnam was nearly over, while todays Republican nominees are leapfrogging themselves towards an expansion of Bush's unpopular war and other extreme foreign policy positions. But the upshot for Cohen is that he got to write an exciting article about how Democrats might lose!
