Boutique hot sauce

I'd always been curious about boutique hot sauces--the bottles with the sometimes funny names and often obscene labels that you can find here and there in delis and specialty stores. Not any longer. The defining feature of these sauces, it turns out, is that they are extremely, extremely hot. This weekend, I was the unfortunate victim of a thimble-full of Ass Reaper. I don't particularly recommend it, unless you think you'd enjoy 20 full minutes of acute burning behind the whole of your face. Its one redeeming quality is that its schtick is a little bit subtler and more clever than other ass-themed sauces in this vain (see, for instance, Colon Blow: A Red Habanero Enema). Still, try and steer clear.

Comments

I think you mean 'hot' instead of 'spicy'. I'm still laughing after spending more time googling on hot sauces than I'd admit to.

You may be in for a memorable Monday, Monday... (Wasn't that a famous Mamas and Poppas song?)

The Ass Reaper apparently doesn't publish their Scoville Units of hotness, but it is ranked with some other sauces in 300-500,000 range. Assuming 300,000 for Reaper and 5,000 for Tabasco Red, it is ONLY 60 times hotter than Tabasco Red.

So, one drop instead of one thimble-full would be probably enough for a vivid memory of the experience, at both ends.

Here's more info:

from wiki on hot sauce (and scoville's):

The heat, or burning sensation, experienced when consuming hot sauce is caused by capsaicin. The burning sensation is not "real" in the sense of damage being wrought on tissues. In fact, it is merely a harmless chemical reaction with the body's neurological system (see this technical explanation).

The seemingly subjective perceived heat of hot sauces can be measured by the Scoville scale. The Scoville scale number indicates how many times something must be diluted with an equal volume water until people can no longer feel any sensation from the capsaicin. The hottest hot sauce scientifically possible is one rated at 16,000,000 Scoville units, which is pure capsaicin

from the wiki on habaneros:

Most habaneros will rate between 200,000 and 300,000 Scoville units.

McIlhenny Co. offers a Habanero version of their popular Tabasco sauce at 7,000 to 8,000 Scoville units...

from wike on tabasco:

The original, classic red variety of Tabasco pepper sauce measures 2,500-5,000 SHU on the Scoville scale.

from tabasco.com: (on Jalapeno-based Green Sauce)

TABASCO® brand Green Pepper Sauce is the mildest of all our pepper sauces with a Scoville Unit Rating of 600 - 800.

I went to a dinner Friday night where the main goal seemed to be how hot can we make every item of food and, if thats not enough, how many hot sauces can we add to said food items.

Maybe its just me and my own tolerance but everyone was talking about the different flavors of the hot sauce, the nuances and such, while I sat there sweating my ass off with my mouth on fire.

I can handle a fair amount of hotness in general. This was just ridiculous.
