Almost daily Corner bashing

George Bush tells deeply opportunistic lies about Vietnam and, of course, Victor Davis Hanson is extremely supportive.

In all the hysteria over the Bush Vietnam evocation, people are losing their sanity. Now those in Vietnam are being dragged out and quoted by the mainstream media to prove Bush’s lunacy. But what are subjects of a police state supposed to say — “I wish our present Communist dictatorship had lost”? Do we think Cubans routinely give widely publicized interviews criticizing their Castroites — and live?

Admittedly I'm young and don't really know to what extent the South Vietnamese would, as a cohort, have favored reunification over the continued American destruction of their countryside. But I do know that today we can conduct these things called polls which account for public opinion broadly and which completely obviate the need for "widely publicized interviews" criticizing dangerous leaders at great risk. So, yes, I grant that the Cuban exile population in Florida escaped Castro and destroyed national policy in America because they think of Castro a uniquely inhuman monster. But by the same token VDH ought to grant that the people of Iraq want us to withdraw from their country and that any analogy between Iraq and Vietnam ought to hold on that point.
