I realize unions aren't exactly in their heyday in the GWBush 21st century, but if my assumptions below are correct, I do think the fire fighters are showing their weak hand here, at least a little bit. If they think they deserve clout, then they should hold off on supporting anybody until they see the candidate they like best really working for the endorsement. By not endorsing Edwards or Obama for fear of pissing off Clinton it's quite as if they're admitting they're too weak to handle the aftermath of pissing her off...which isn't exactly the sort of thing a union wants to project.

Really, what's Hillary gonna do to them if they piss her off? Start a bunch of fires? Make a speech talking about how people who run into burning buildings are pussies? I really, really hope she doesn't get the nom, but I'd donate to her campaign if she did either of those. The huevos involved in a presidential candidate doing either may just qualify her for the office.
Starting fires is good for business :)
In 2003, Kerry was dead in the water when the IAFF endorsed him. I don't think they had long conversations with Kerry's pollsters and field operatives and could forsee the Iowa victory. It's not unprecedented.
