Nicknames

Some renewed speculation about where "Fredo"--Bush's nickname for Gonzales--actually came from. My new theory is this: George Bush befriends Alberto Gonzales years ago and starts calling him "Al" (you know... in that semi-Texan drawl he's so loathed in the north east for faking). Time passes until one day, in the presence of refined company, George Bush is forced to refer to his friend by his full name. Except that by now he's entirely forgotten which Hispanic name starting with the letters "Al" actually belongs to Gonzales. He does a bit of eeny meeny miny moe and settles on Alfredo. He's wrong. Everybody laughs at George Bush, including George Bush. And from that moment forward the man who would one day become America's worst president refers as "Fredo" to the man who would one day desecrate the office of Attorney General.

THe whole Bush nicknames thing has no charm at all when you consider either of the two reasons he might use them (1) he deliberately wants to demean and put-down those he associates with (as so often happens with the schoolyard bully who is dumb as a fencepost but needs to feel superior) (2) his brain, reflected in his memory, language and childish stubbornness, indicates something pathologically wrong inside.

I believe both are at work in Bush's case. Perhaps a post-mortem brain disection will clear up the choices, but on the other hand they mind just empty space when they crack it open.
