Whenever I hear "looming war with Iran" news, I turn to my friends at The Corner for the most up to the minute unhinged warmongering the Internets has to offer, and they almost never let me down. C
Senators Lieberman and Kyl are offering an amendment today calling on the US to combat, contain and roll back Iran’s aggression in Iraq. It also designates the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a foreign terrorist organization....We either confront this enemy — or we let them defeat us.
Loosely translated, this means that if we don't go to war with Iran, we'll end up withdrawing from Iraq without having gone to war with Iran. And if those are the terms, I'm all for "letting them defeat" us.

Is this a possibility?
BushCo having drummed in the refrain that we must fight them there to avoid fighting them here (which an alarming number of US folks seem to believe), and since Iran (or more properly, Saudi Arabia) has not attacked us here recently and renewed the US 9/11 raw retaliation anger, the reservoir of anti-islamic fervor in the US is nearly dry as far as the 'average' citizen perceives.
The cure that will refuel the US anger reservoir possibly is at hand. Just preemptively attack Iran, and wait for the Iranians to ignore the 'avoid attacking us here' drumbeat and send some para-militaries or whatever into Iraq, Israel and here to the US. Wallah! Mega9/11. And a final US excuse to just level the playing field by wiping out another civilization or three. A clean slate! A billion (people) here, a billion there, pretty soon it adds up to real numbers - as ol' Sen. Ev. Dicksen used to say.
Then Joe L, the National Review, AIPAC and the Weekly Standard can say 'mission accomplished'. Bush and Cheney get to smile, and the defense industry is very happy at least for a bit. (Former) Isreal, not so much.
Bonus: we don't have to worry about future global warming, an asteroid strike, or a cooling Sun putting humankind on the path to extinction. Just fast-forward the inevitable end of a habitable planet earth by that crazy upstart homo-sapien species. 65 million years from now some species might be digging up strange bones and wondering what led to the disappearance of such a prevalent and dominant species - just like the dinos - but they won't find an iridium layer in the rocks and a crater in some ocean to explain it all.

This has NOT been a good week for rationality.
Such mighty warriors aren't they? What a pathetic bunch of bedwetting cowardly chickenhawks they are.
