Bombing as a means of effective diplomacy

Over at The New Republic Dennis Ross applauds Israel's shady bombing of Syria as an effective way of communicating to Iran that it might well commit similar acts of war against their country...causing, we are left to assume, far more devastating consequences.

Of course, we don't yet know what really happened that night. But "shady" bombing? As opposed to what other kind of bombing? Surely one can conceive that the Israeli action might have been a means of preventing something terrible from happening. An ounce of prevention...
