Chris Orr has some related thoughts here. I think there may be some truth to this. More specifically, it's perfectly possible that Obama's advisers believe that, because of his race, he can't afford to run a more confrontational campaign. But I think this badly misses the fact that this isn't a binary dilemma. It's not that Obama has to choose between high-minded, though too-subtle rhetoric and aggressive indignance. In between, there's a whole range of tones Obama can strike, any number of which will allow him to say, with great specificity, why he's different from the leader of the pack.
