That's how Petraeus refers to the troops. What the hell is he thinking? How, aside from the fact that soldiers both then and now shoot guns in wars, are the two generations comparable.
Update: Yglesias sends me several examples of this going back three years now. I must have been tuning it out. Probably because it's totally ridiculous.

the myths we live by....
so that i can get my myth-observance correct, i need the New Rules. what's the standard now:
- number of days that war lasts (Iraq II now being longer than WWII)?
- the then-current gas-baggyness of the generals and politicians?
Who do we hold responsible for this awful meme? Was it Tom Brokaw's book? At the time, I thought Brokaw was nuts to say the WWII folks somehow outdid the efforts in our revolutionary war and civil war.
I'd sure like to ask Petreaus as a Senator if he thinks every new generation's wars exceeded the works of the founders and maintainers of our union.
