It's exceedingly uncommon for me to agree with George Will about anything, but I think he and I are on the same page about Fred Thompson.

Although that column has George Will's name on it, he clearly didn't write it. First of all, it is factual, which is the giveaway.
The GOP 08 primary is a thing to behold - it takes one's breath away to see such weakness and choral singing in support of truly unpopular positions. Thompson, Guiliani and Romney doing backflips on most of what they have done in the past and getting some traction. Brownback, Huckabee and Paul mostly doing what they've done in the past as conservative Goopers - but getting no traction.
I keep wondering if the 'party fathers' think they can produce a electoral college victory out of this melange (and some voting hanky-panky, of course). Or, are they counting on another war, martial law, and suspension of the Constitution to keep them in power?
