Drop FISA

Since Republicans seem unafraid to demand advance pardons for law breaking telecoms, I'm coming to the conclusion that something like the RESTORE Act will be impossible, and that Democrats should just drop all FISA-related business, let the Protect America Act sunset, and maybe take the issue up again in 2009. Maybe.

I agree! But that's unlikely. More likely is yet another submission to the fear mongering that the GOP has become a GOP trademark.

The ONLY way the FISA law can be really fixed is in committee, where a simple majority can prevail. Since the Senate floor action on amendments will change the bill to Bush preferences (with BushDog Dems helping), bottling the bill up in committee is the only path that can prevent submission. But, the Judiciary committee will not bottle up the bill, IMO. Finestein et al will 'just go along' with the Bush program.
