Huh?!: A Chris Shays memoir

Yesterday, Congressman Chris Shays of Connecticut softballed Condoleezza Rice with a question about the much criticized Armenian genocide resolution that passed through the House International Relations committee several days ago. The point of his question was to allow the Secretary of State to hammer the bid--and by extension Democrats--as a poorly conceived and possibly dangerous bit of demagoguery. But here's his quote:

Congress, recently, in the... international relations committee, passed a resolution basically condemning Turkey of genocide. I happen to be on that resolution, but i can't imagine for the life of me what good that will do, how will that help us work with the Turkish govt and how will the help us have our troops in Iraq succeed and what are the consequences of that resolution moving forward?

These hearings are so much political theater that I'm in no way surprised that some Republican brought this up. But shouldn't they have at the very least found somebody who's not a cosponsor of the resolution to get the point across?

Just consider how much nicer the phrase "I happen to be on that resolution" is than "I am cosponsor of a resolution that I oppose and can't understand what it is intended to do".

It just happened! Immaculate conception!
