I'll have more on this point later today, I think. But Spencer Ackerman's latest Iraq article running at the Prospect contained a quote from Senate leadership that have me scratching my head.
According to Jim Manley, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s spokesman, the strategy over the coming year will be to relentlessly schedule war-related legislation until, closer to the election, Republicans yield to "a real change in policy, including bringing our troops home as quickly as possible."
That sounds an awful lot like the strategy they adopted during this last year (at least that's how they talked about it) which correlated with a significant drop substantial increase in the number of troops we have in Iraq. I'm happy to forgive the Democrats for taking a bit of time getting up and running. It's a tough business! But if the first 12 months of the 110th Congress have taught Reid anything it should be that the first 12 months didn't work all that well, and that getting anything done--if that is the goal--will require being dramatically more aggressive.
