All that nuclear stuff

Probably not really true. At least according to the Associated Press:

The U.S. called for new sanctions against Iran after a U.N. report Thursday that said the Tehran regime has been generally truthful about key aspects of its past nuclear activities, but is continuing to enrich uranium....

Much of the 10-page report, which was made available to The Associated Press, focused on the history of Iran's black-market nuclear procurements and past development of uranium enrichment technology, which can produce material for nuclear warheads.

The IAEA appeared to be giving Tehran a pass on that issue, repeatedly saying it concluded that "Iran's statements are consistent with ... information available to the agency."

"Iran has provided sufficient access to individuals and has responded in a timely manner to questions and provide (needed) clarifications and amplifications," the report said.

If there was one point I could convince American leaders of, it would be that news like this doesn't mean we should broadly exonerated Iran when Iran does bad things, or that Iran should be treated as a good-faith ally. But it does show rather conclusively that Iran is agreeable enough--to oversight, diplomatic outreach, engagement with international institutions--that time is on our side. And the hysterical screeching from our officials is harming, perhaps irrevocably, the prospect of a mutually acceptable resolution.

But, of course, they already know this and carry on unabated for perverse reasons of their own.

Some people believe what Iran wants them to believe. In this case, they believe that the Iranians are "agreeable enough--to oversight, diplomatic outreach, engagement with international institutions--that time is on our side." And Ahmadinejad seemed the soul of affability when he spoke at Columbia University, saying "We love ALL peoples." But these are the same Iranians who are enriching uranium in secret while openly calling for the destruction of Israel. Let's not be gullible about them even if the IAEA seems unconcerned.
