I've never worked for a political campaign in any capacity, so I have almost no frame of reference on the question of whether it's weird that Edwards and his campaign manager are cozy with some members of the Obama team. But I will say this much: it seems natural enough to me that a guy with Trippi's mind and Trippi's history would advise Edwards to go negative at this stage in the race. My impression from cursory glances at the data is that Obama's supporters are markedly different from Edwards' and Clinton's--that any voters who turn away from Hillary are more likely to bounce into Edwards' camp than into Obama's. Maybe that's what Trippi's thinking, maybe he has a different rationale. But this seems less like mutiny to me than like a win-win situation for Trippi, giving Edwards solid advice that happens not to disrupt Obama's efforts at all. If Edwards wins, he'll be fully vindicated. If Obama wins, he might well find himself a home there. If Clinton wins--well, I think he was out of luck there long before this primary season grew so tense.
