Asking the obvious?

A good question from a New York Times op-ed: "Once you’ve helped distort W.M.D. intelligence to trick the country into war, shouldn’t you be banned for life from ever having another top-level government post concerning W.M.D.?"

Indeed. The question comes as an incredulous footnote at the end of this thorough and timely op-ed written by Maureen Dowd. Yes, you read that correctly.

Who knew that Dowd could even read, or wanted to? And on wonkish foreign policy stuff?

The explanation for Dowd, I suspect, is that we in the ackward period before the electoral primaries - and which could go in almost any direction. She's keeping her snark powder dry for when she can focus on the real candidates (free of holiday diversions). Maybe she'll join the anti-pants-suits brigade fighting Hillary when the spring Robins arrive.

When kids start writing on the walls with their crayons, most parents sequester the crayons. They don't buy them a new box with more colors. So, although the Dowd point about the re-enabling of the wall-writers (Wolfy, Feith, et al) is a very good one - and sort of obvious in a rational world - it really indicates that we have jumped the shark on the Bigotry of Low Expectations.

I think our reaction rationally should be more like: "Well, Duh!"
