I found this flipping my way through the Washington Post's free daily, The Express.
As near as I can tell, it's an advertisement for an eight day long protest of The Discovery Channel. Apparently the organizer, Lee, is upset that the Discovery Channel's efforts (or lack thereof) to Save The Planet have been thus far unsuccessful. The planet's still a suckfest. Clearly, though, his efforts would be better spent protesting The History Channel, which, by airing vacuous crap all the time, almost certainly has an impact that's at odds with its ostensible mission.

Anyone but me recall the GOPer nutball that some years ago suggested eliminating PBS because Discovery Channel was all we needed for science, technology, etc. on TV/Cable?
Now, History Channel never was much more than recycled biblical fantasies, WWII pseudo-documentaries, and assorted re-purposed crapola. History as lived by evangelicals....
Science Channel is a bit better but shows out-of-date science without dates of production revealed. National Geographic channel seems to get better each year. The Dog Whisperer is awesome on Friday nights!
Oh, the children! Junk food and junk information. More like toxic waste!
But I'm just an amateur pundit, so disregard the above.
You are a professional pundit hiding in the shadows.
Better yet, just kill your tv (or at least your cable connection).
Jon Stewart is available via comedycentral.com and everything else worth watching is offered commercial-free on DVD by Netflix.
It appears that Lee doesn't seem to understand that Discovery Communications is a FOR PROFIT enterprise, and at no time have they ever claimed to be about saving the planet. Being "green" and pretending to care about the environment is an idea that sells for the time being, so they will air shows that make people feel better about themselves as long as there's an audience out there.
Indeed, the Discovery Channel is a FOR PROFIT organization. But, as an employee of the network, I can say with first-hand knowledge that the company is dedicated to the environment and all that is nescesary in preserving such. Programming aside, simply working in the building you will notice this. Aggressive recycling programs, incentives for employess to be healthy and take public transport, to numerous other internal programs that the average viewer would have no knowledge of. In my building, we recycle everything within view. We even have smart lights, and appliances throughout the site that use low energy and shut themselves off. I'm sure there are numerous other green practices that I can't even begin to remember.
To my knowledge, it was never DC's policy to save the world, however, it does encourage it's employees and it's viewers to play THEIR role in becoming better global citizens.
I'm not a company spokesperson, but I think that is something to be proud of. It's not a secret that DC is one of the highest rated companies to work for. Just ask an employee.
Cynics. Who needs them?
