Romney in Michigan

Kos is right on the strategy, but contra Matt I'm not totally convinced that Romney would make the least-bad president in the GOP field. Keep in mind Charlie Savage's questionnaire about executive power, and Mitt Romney's responses versus those of John McCain and Ron Paul--the other two Republicans who submitted. And then read Glenn Greenwald on the significance of it all. I'd place Romney above Giuliani, but I think that's a rank he shares with just about all of the other leading contenders.

I have an additional criteria that I think is crucial: Who would the GOP candidate likely select as VP?

McCain is quite likely not to make it through 4 years as President (71 is getting up into the senior-senior class, you know - and his body/mind already shows substantial signs of wear).

My great fear is that McCain would be pressured by the Goopers to select Jeb Bush as VP - get elected, and then have a 'medical incident' that made the Bush reign resume. Romney is far less likely to choose Jebbie, IMO, although possibly Huck or Rudy might take the Theocon/NeoCon/CorpCon bait.

Besides, Romney has, objectively, shown some governing sense in the past, but all the other Gooper's fail that test. And a medical 'accident' is less likely to be plausible for Willard Romney. Beyond that, somehow I think their might be a shred of decency in Romney, where the other's (except maybe Huck) fail that test as well. Romney has to worry about establishing a legacy of competent governing Mormonism to establish for the future, and the prophets will likely hold him to that goal. That he's a flip-flopper without a principled reason for flopping isn't in his favor, but.... he did make it through a term as MA governorship without creating a total disgrace.

But Romney has an unrivaled record fawning over Bush Cheney of late. Romney + Cheney acolyte = disaster.

Yes, I agree, Brian. But, as I mentioned, the leaders (prophets) of Romney's church are not about to let him be controlled by freaking nuts - but they may accept standard nuts. He isn't really a free agent, one can be assured.

Anyway, he's healthy and doesn't smoke, drink or use drugs. That's an improvement! His sperm seems to be sturdy too.

Bottom Line: I'll take Romney over ANY of the others in the event Rove prevails again.
