Is 'vapidity' the word I'm searching for in this reporter's depth of perception.

One suspects the byline is not where the reporter was. Everything is x miles west of here, etc. I guess it depends on what 'here' is here. The Mojave is ONLY 100 miles from Redlands (it's practically a neighbor, right?) according to my guesstimate based on google maps. Long Beach is even closer! Or is Long Beach in the Mojave too? Maybe the reporter flew into Las Vegas and thinks east Los Angeles metro area is just a suburb to LV. Viva Los Vegas!
