White House FISA lies. Yep. More.

George Bush has released a myth/fact sheet. It's actually pretty hilarious. For instance, one might think that people at the White House understand that a myth/fact sheet works by introducing a widely believed myth (say, that a frog will allow itself to be cooked to death if you heat its water to a boil) and then dispelling that myth with the relevant fact (a frog will, in fact, leap out of the water--or attempt to--when the temperature climbs too high).

But one would be wrong. For instance:

MYTH: If any new surveillance needs to begin, the FISA court can approve a request within minutes. In the case of an emergency, surveillance can begin immediately and FISA approval can be obtained later.

FACT: Reverting to the outdated FISA statute risks our national security. FISA's outdated provisions created dangerous intelligence gaps, which is why Congress passed the Protect America Act in the first place.

If the claim in the myth is, in fact, inaccurate, then the fact should read: "The FISA court can not approve a request within minutes, and emergency surveillance can not begin immediately." Or something. But, of course, the "myth" is true, and, as you can see, the "fact" is a rather large heap of irrelevant bullshit.

In a few of the other myth/facts, the the president et al at least get the structure right, but that just requires them to engage in a little bit of old fashioned lying.

Then there's this:

Myth: 2 + 2 = 4.
FACT: Democrats are terrorists.

And so on.

Maybe it is time to resurrect the old phrase "getting away with murder" which for a long period was the shorthand for breaking the law and not suffering even an indictment or arrest - and for sure conviction is outside the pale.

The word "LIE" is a perfectly good word for telling an untruth with the intent to do so. That's clearly the situation with Bush/Cheney and the Cronies (a Rock band! - or maybe Punk).

How's this for an idea: make it a federal crime for an official to make statements or issue press releases that contain LIES! If there was no intent, and they can show that in court, then they are home free (instead of the current situation of getting away with murder because the prosecutors are all in the bag for Bush/Cheney). [Now I understand that such a law is probably impossible to pass in the current Congress, but let's have a fight over it.] It would be interesting to see BushCo explain why they should lie to US public and get away with it.

The myth as stated by the President is correct. So is the fact. Here's the truth so "nobly" ignored by pathetic leftists. A judge can now turn down a request for emergency surveillance after it has started, because said judge does not believe there was probable cause, and the emergency surveillance has to be shut down. Now the outdated FISA provisions have opened up the intelligence gaps outlined in the President's fact. National security is now at risk.

Lies of omission by "liberals" are still lies.

SteveIL, you can find Depends for sale in every major supermarket and drugstore. Better stock up fast. Pants wetting time begins imminently.

So, Steve. NSA & President decide that surveillance of Target X must begin immediately. Surveillance begins. FISC judge reviews request within 72 hours, finds that Bush & McConnell are actually abusing FISA powers and, as such, shuts down the surveillance.

What exactly is the problem there?

Unimportant, but something I've always kinda wondered: Why is
2+2=4 the canonical example of an indisputable fact, rather than
(say) 1+1=2?

Do I really have to answer that question for you, matt? It's as easy as 2+2=4. ;-)

"National security is now at risk."

To much the same degree, I would guess, that we are all in continuous danger of being struck by a meteor.

Why is it that right wingers, who place so much importance in being tough, constantly reveal themselves to be a bunch of little babies, whining in fear at their own shadows?

So, it looks like it'll take another homeland attack to make the Dems realize that this stuff is important to our security. You'd think they'd learn something after 9/11.
They just don't get it......yet.

Wow Bez - sounds like you are looking forward to an attack>? Special! - maybe the fact that your Dear Leader and his merry men are lying and enjoying trying to wrack up the fear (obviously working on the Faux News watchers like baz and steve >>)

The fact that the terrorism "9/11" happened on Bush's watch - doesn't seem to get through to them that Republican's don't protect - they somehow manage to make everything worse. And still the Neocons try to blame the Democrats. geez reality would be nice
