"That one!"

Somebody needs to mention that this is a singular rendering of the phrase "Those people!"

Comments

Actually, not it's not. The singular rendering of "those people" would be "that person" - which would still be awkward phrasing (considering Obama was right beside him and there was no need to avoid gender-specific pronouns) but definitely less demeaning.

Well, if you're objectifying people in a derogatory sense ("those people"), then using the phrase "that one" is certainly the singular rendering.

The plain fact that McCain was agitated and looking out at the crowd as he gestured at Obama and said "that one" implies that he was objectifying Obama.

I hope the Obama camp does not fall into this trap of being so race sensitive that it allows McCain's comment to turn this election into an election about race. We've already seen how damaging that can be to Obama. Obama needs to pass it off as merely an awkward comment from a grumpy old grandpa McCain and then move on!

I agree with you, he "meant" "that one"
as in "let's git that one", "that one's got a smart mouth",
"that "uppity" one"- we all know what he meant.
The problem is he's running for President-

I totally agree Brian. I think his saying "that one" is the same as referring to African-Americans as "you people", i.e.: "you people like fried chicken and watermelon". McCain seems genuinely shocked that an uppity negro is running against him and will be even more shocked when "that one" wins. McCain appears to have nothing but contempt for everything except rich people and warmongering.
