Idea!

Any Detroit bailout package should include the following provision: Auto companies that receive federal funds must provide the government with X thousand hybrid or otherwise low-emissions vehicles. The government, in turn, will create a program that a). allows low-income Americans (and Americans that are having a hard time making SUV payments, etc.) to trade in their gas guzzlers for new, clean vehicles, and b). recycles the scrap, where possible, into various flanks of a green infrastructure investment program.

Any Detroit bailout package will include various provisions, none of which will be enforced.

Not a bad idea. Except for the "let's reward people who made a horrible decision to purchase an SUV already" part. Just give a large tax break to ANYONE who buys a new, greener hybid or electric vehicle.

Government should get out of the business of telling people how to spend their money.
Sadly, a reorganization by chapter 11 is probably not possible for GM, because buyers would completely stop buying the cars. Since that's the case, a government bailout should the most important characteristics of a bankruptcy: it should void the labor contracts, supplier contracts and dealer agreements. That way GM could lower its operating costs and eliminate weak dealers and brands. Without that, they'll just be back next year looking for another $25 billion.

BTW who rides the corporate jet to make a big public display of returning their 6 figure salary/bonus?

creative idea. Because it is so simple a solution, it probably won't be looked at seriously. But keep pushing it. I see it getting traction in some circles.

The reason people by SUVs is because 60% of all Americans are so morbidly obese that they can't fit into a smaller / hybrid vehicle. Until the nation addresses this epidemic, all other issues are really meaningless, including health care, gas mileage, global warming, GM bailout.

I was thinking the right approach would be to mandate that the government buy American-made hybrid or other alternative fuel vehicles for all fleet purchases over the next 3-5 years, ramping up to 100% alternative fuel by, say, 2012. (And please, not that b.s. "flex fuel" stuff that can run on gasoline "or whatever else is around", as though anything other than gasoline is just laying around.)

I also propose replacing the UAW health care with a pilot version of Obamacare, in order to cut their labor costs and indirectly subsidize job creation without handing the automakers a duffel full of fifties.

My original post is startlingly similar to this blog post.

Any bailout of Detroit should be predicated on the successful production of Back to the Future Hoverboards because my life has been utterly disappointing ever since I realized you couldn't buy them.

How about we just let Detroit fail so that the market can be cleared for clean cars?

The fact that Amtrak and local transit are, in part, federally funded provides a direct pipeline to an array of jobs of all skill levels. In addition, this could be a solution to the financial difficulties faced by American automakers. During and after World War II, these productions lines switched from making automobiles to military hardware and then back to automobiles. It does not seem unreasonable that they could retooled to build railroad coaches. The interior of passenger rail cars have not improved significantly since the 1950’s, if the innovative skills of Detroit were applied to railroad rolling stock, I believe those cars would be the envy of the world.

The bailout should be paid out of the windfall profits that the oil companies have made. It would probably be chump change for them.

Let GM go BK or make them replace all the light rail they systematically destroyed. Same for F & C. Let them fail so we can concentrate on finally building a national system of mass transit that will move people, goods and esp. produce in a much more economical and environmentally friendly manner. Only light & heavy rail and other public transportation solutions can save the morass that is suburban America as we enter the post-petroleum era and our days of personal transportation are numbered. Install them on our current freeways and roadways.
