The Dredded Judd

judd-gregg.jpgWith surely nothing other than the health and high-functioning of the agency in mind, Barack Obama is reportedly courting New Hampshire Senator Judd Gregg to head the Department of Commerce.

Gregg is a Republican, from a state with a Democratic governor, and his departure from the Senate would in all likelihood give the Democrats their 60th vote. Why would Gregg do that? Perhaps he won't. But he is up for re-election in 2010, and by moving over to the executive branch, he might prevent himself from becoming another John Sununu. In other words, it would keep his political career alive.

The flip side to this, though, is that Gregg is a regular contender for the Senate's Biggest Twerp Award. And nice as it would be to get him out of Congress, it would really be preferable to root him out of national politics altogether. So here's the Beutler plan: After Obama appoints Gregg and welcomes New Hampshire's fresh-faced, reliably blue senator to Washington, he should pull whatever strings are necessary to secure her a place on the commerce committee and kindly suggest that her first piece of legislation be titled "The Department of Commerce Abolition Act of 2009."

It should without hassle thanks to the shiny new filibuster proof majority Democrats achieved courtesy of the outgoing Commerce Secretary, former Senator Judd Gregg. Oh, and just for good measure, Obama should laud the bill at the signing ceremony as an important initiative that will help rein in government spending.

Comments

I'd say odds are 50:50 that it's legit, but on the other hand it could be a ploy to get the NRSC to throw tons of money at Gregg to keep him in the Senate, and Obama's paying him back for supporting the stimulus, maybe even EFCA and/or healthcare.

This has been mentioned elsewhere, but I wouldn't be surprised if our governor, John Lynch, chooses a Republican to replace Gregg. He has a penchant for high Broderism, and more than that an aversion to news-making (through, for example, giving Dems their 60th seat), which could translate into a moderate GOPer like former Rep. Jeb Bradley getting the seat rather than a Dem. That appointee would be weaker in the 2010 special election than Gregg, though; for example, I think Paul Hodes could beat Bradley fairly easily.

In any event, switching a Senate seat by appointment would certainly set off a high profile controversy, the sort of which I don't really see anyone wanting. So if I were speculating, and I suppose I am, I'd guess that this was more about giving Gregg some leverage over the Republican caucus.

Twerp is a pretty mild rebuke for a GOPer. Gregg far too often drinks deeply of the koolaid, red flavored.

I'm not sure about the Commerce Dept abolishment. One thing I've thought about is a combination of Labor and Commerce, but the danger there is that a fat cat biz guy would prolly be appointed.

Since the Commerce perch is worth what somebody said about the VP office a long way back (a bucket of spit), I guess having biz own their own department is not so bad.

I just wish some of the statistical functions of labor and commerce were somehow combined free from political manipulation and tweaking to hide bad news (and more like CBO). We should be able to trust the integrity of government statistical reports on the economy (from both labor and commerce), and both have been badly mauled by political hacks for Bushian/Rovian ends. Does anyone really believe that unemployment is below 10%? Or that GDP only fell about 4% in the 4Q08 (even if you knew that growing inventories made the number look even better - in downturns inventory growth shouldn't make GDP decrease less real?

What we really need are Structural Engineers of Government! Wouldn't that be a great college major?

thats cool. i, for one, am impressed with the hardware. the device, though bulky, is increadibly easy to use and in the 2nd gen zune wouldn't change a thing, same for the ui. Now the part that is irrating me; the fact that the zune seems to be completly abandoned by microsoft. only to 1.4 in almost a year, not good. wifi restrictions need to be lifted to make "the social" work, add video to zm. in short the zune is the only good thing about owning a zune.

And they have placed trust in the government not just to fix the economy but to do so with minimal waste and, more importantly, in a way that destroys--not reinforces--the culture of rot that created the crisis in the first place. Collectively they have the power to take that trust away, and while that might spell economic doom for all of us, they might understandably (or rightly) conclude that the government's blowing it anyway, so why waste the extra few hundred billion dollars.
